Buy Slalom or Freestyle Skates - The best models and brands

One of the most popular forms of inline skating is slalom skating. It all starts with placing a row of cones to go around them. From then on, we look for more and more complicated ways of passing the cones with one foot, crossing them or even using only one wheel - everything is possible in freestyle slalom nowadays!

There are two variants of freestyle slalom skating. On the one hand there is the Freestyle slalom which consists of performing all kinds of tricks or even dances passing cones and on the other hand, the Speed Slalom in which you try to get around the cones as fast as possible trying not to knock any of them down.

Nowadays we can find slalom skates with 4 or 3 wheels. The most used brands for freestyle and speed slalom are Powerslide, Seba, FR and Flying Eagle. Generally, carbon or fibreglass skates are used.

Which slalom or freestyle skates to buy?

Slalom skating is quite demanding in terms of skate mastery. At beginner level, almost any type of skate can be used, but preferably one that gives very good support. Plastic hard-boot skates can be a good option for beginners in freestyle slalom and speed slalom. However, this type of skate has some play between the boot and the skate shell, which does not make them the most precise. For this reason, the most commonly used type of skate is the one that has a carbon fibre or glass shell with a leather or similar covering.

Likewise, one of the most important points for slalom skating is that the frame or configuration of the wheels is rockering, that is to say, that the wheels at the ends do not touch the ground at the same time as those in the centre. This can be achieved by mounting wheels of different sizes, by having a frame with screws that change the position of the wheels or by using a frame that is already rockered as standard.

Frequently asked questions about slalom skates

Do I need special skates for slalom skating?

At beginner level, you can get started in slalom skating with almost any skate. If you are looking for more complex tricks, you can continue with a hard plastic boot skate. Finally, if you really want to develop your skills to the maximum, you should get slalom skates with carbon or fibreglass skins as they will give you much more precision.

What is the difference between freeskate and slalom skates?

Freeskate skates are designed for multi-purpose use and could be used to get you started in slalom skating. However, freestyle slalom requires a lot of precision and control, which a conventional freeskate skate cannot provide. On the other hand, slalom skates usually have a rockered wheel or frame configuration, which makes them quite unstable for street skating.

Do you need special cones for slalom skating?

In slalom skating, the cones should be small in size and there are official sizes. For the price they cost, it is highly recommended to buy cones designed for freestyle slalom that will not block our skate in case of colliding with a cone.

Which skate brands are the best for slalom skating?

The brands that are investing the most in developing slalom skates are Seba, FR and Powerslide. Flying Eagle is also bringing out better and better designed models that have little to envy to the rest of the brands.
